Ride Log #14 @ The Quantocks 31 August 2002

Back

Well where do I start! I thought Cwmcarn was good but the Quantocks makes it disappear in to insignificance! we started the ride at 1:30 on Saturday afternoon and the first mile almost killed us all (perhaps it was the big breakfast role on the way down!) I've not ridden on such a loose rubbley surface before and to start with I had a few near misses. But after a few miles it was perfect - a very hard quick rolling surface. We did 28 miles in total and the highlight of the day was definitely an offroad descent we round by accident and this was responsible or my fastest ever speed offroad of 39.1 MPH I knew it was fast when I couldn't even focus in a straight line! Mike was in form and we were cat and mouse'ing for the whole day - but poor Gray had been on holiday for 2 weeks and this was his first ride since Cwmcarn - Oh boy did he struggle.

After a brief coffee stop in a quaint tea room it was off again and this was the real play time, we flew back all over the fast trails and were bunny hopping over logs, stones and pretty much anything that got in the way. On one of the final descents of the day Mike and I were charging down a section of double track chatting about jumping and I saw the perfect opportunity for him to practise - only at the last minute he realised it was a rather large boulder not a grassy jump! this resulted in a mean bunny hop thus saving his wheels from a square end!

I think it's fair to say that this has to be one of the best days riding any of us have ever had and the Quantocks really ought to concentrate a bit more effort on advertising this great mountain biking mecca.
